Roobibos tea has long been considered having "magical" properties by the native South Africans for many centuries because of what they thought of as healing powers the tea possessed. It has, most famously, been used as a drink but also has been part of baths and topical applications to soothe many skin irritations. It grows as a wild, natural plant only on the continent of southern Africa and is harvested and then dried over large areas in the African sun which creates its reddish hue for which it is most well-known.

What has now most recently been discovered by studies done in Japan, England and South Africa is that Roobios contains vast amounts of anti-oxidants similar to the green teas of Asia, but with up to 50% more. At the ICHI Medical University in Japan, it hs been shown that the tea contains Super Oxide Dismutase (SOD) - an outstanding anti-oxidant - along with polyphenols and flavonoids, all prime fighters of free radical damage...those nasty things that can cause cancer. It has also been discovered that the adverse effect of free radicals in the process of aging and decline of the immune system is limited by the anti-oxidants in Rooibos tea. Other studies have found that the agents in the tea calm irritations when applied directly to the skin.
